DeGarmo Estates is a gated community that sits at the intersection of Douglas Road and Main Highway. The property is located on the former estate of Walter C. DeGarmo. His original home still exists on the site and has been carefully and beautifully restored. In 1993, developers built 10 new construction homes within the walls of the DeGarmo estate. It has since become a very private and exclusive community. The new construction homes maintained the Mediterranean style that DeGarmo was famous for. There have been very few sales in the community over the past few years.
A description from a recent home that was listed for sale in De Garmo Estates reads: Elegant Italian-inspired villa in exclusive & gated De Garmo Estates. Drive through the majestic gates onto a winding road canopied by massive oaks. Light-filled living spaces with double-height ceilings & the finest finishes including marble fireplace, coffered & tray ceilings and extensive millwork throughout. Expansive custom kitchen and family room opens to covered terrace & pool surrounded by lush botanical gardens. Close to the Grove village centers boutiques, cafes and bay front parks & marinas.
About Walter C DeGarmo
Walter DeGarmo was a prominent and influential South Florida architect. He graduated from Cornell University with a BA in Architecture and moved to Coconut Grove in 1903 with his father. Upon moving to South Florida, he designed numerous buildings and houses in the area. He was known for his open air loggias and courtyards. My research indicates that DeGarmo designed over 30 homes throughout the Coconut Grove area.
Other DeGarmo buildings throughout Miami include:
- Coconut Grove Women’s Club (South Bayshore Drive)
- Coconut Grove Elementary (Grand Avenue)
- The Old Bank of Coconut Grove (Main Highway)
- Coconut Grove Sailing Club
