We Have Adopted A Peacock!!

In honor of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival this weekend I thought I would take the time today to make a very exciting announcement…..

The EWM Coconut Grove office will be part of The Coconut Grove Peacock Tour!

Peacock

Fashioned after the Cows in Chicago, the Cinncinatti Pig Gig and The Flamingos of Miami Beach, The Coconut Grove Peacock Tour is an interactive public art exhibition.  These larger than life fiberglass peacocks will be designed by local artists and sponsored by local businesses to benefit local charities.  Our office is partnerng with Casa Valentina a local organization which helps young women transition successfully from foster care to independant living.  You can find out more about Casa Valentina here.

Ed King is the artist who will design the peacock for our office.  He is a graduate of the Art Institute of Miami and has lived in Miami for over 20 years.  We will be meeting with him next week to discuss the design.  The peacock will be placed directly in front of our EWM office.

About 20 peacocks will be on display throughout the Coconut Grove village for 6 months starting in late March, early April.   At the end of their run, the peacocks will be auctioned off in a black tie charity event.

This is a very exciting thing for Coconut Grove as it will bring a lot of exposure to our town.

Many thanks to EWM Realtors, Inc. for its sponsorship of our Peacock!

North Grove Canopy

DSC_0207

I have lived all over Coconut Grove (North, South and Center) but I will always be partial to North Coconut Grove for its beautiful canopy of oak trees.   They add great character to the neighborhood.

I especially like this mossy covered oak on Tigertail Avenue.

Coral Rock Walls In Coconut Grove

DSC_0317

One of the many things that make Coconut Grove unique are the beautiful coral rock walls that line the streets.

I snapped these photos early this morning along Main Highway.

See A Resemblance?

DSC_0224

Our EWM office Christmas party was last night and I wanted to thank Gwen Taylor for my new office mascot…. the Riley Coconut Head.

Unfortunately I do see a resemblance (except for the cocktail, which is usually much bigger).

Did You Know?

In the right sidebar of my website where it says Search Site you can search for any word that I’ve ever mentioned on The Real Estate Coconut.  It is a great tool if you are interested in a particular street, building or community.  I always group my posts into “Categories” (on the left sidebar), but the search tool is great when you are looking for something more specific.

Just type in Waterfront, New Construction, The Cloisters, Grovenor House, Poinciana Avenue etc. and a list of all blog posts (including this one) that mention that word/phrase will appear.

Pick Up A Rake!!

Eyesore

Being a 40 year resident of the Grove, I love it here more than anybody and appreciate the overgrown canopies and landscaping.  But one of my pet peeves as I drive around the streets here is that some property owners just don’t take care of their swale areas.   Although the City of Miami technically owns the swale outside your home, you have a (legal and moral) responsibility for maintaining it.

I won’t name names, but check out the picture I took this morning on my drive in to work.  It is unfortunate because there are some great houses on this street but their values are being brought down by their “messy” neighbors.

If you are one of the offenders, for the community’s sake, pick up a rake!!

Coconut Grove Pathways

MainHighway1

Coconut Grove neighborhoods may not have many sidewalks to speak of, but if you can make your way to the Commodore Bike Path or to South Bayshore Drive, you will have a pathway that leads you all the way north to Key Biscayne or south to Matheson Hammock Park and Fairchild Gardens.

I hear many people complain about the fact that we don’t have sidewalks like other areas.  But in my opinion the lack of them adds to the beauty of Coconut Grove.  Instead of having a setback of 10 feet on every property where there is only grass and concrete, owners plant lush gardens and trees (ever heard of the Coconut Grove land grab?).  It really adds to the canopy of the Grove :)
